In June, farmers received access to more than 660 hectares of land cleared under the state programme of compensation for the demining of agricultural land. Mine action operators have started work on clearing another 2,500 hectares of land. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Economy Ihor Bezkaravaynyi.
"We continue to work on land clearance under the state compensation programme and transfer it to farmers for economic use. We are also constantly working to introduce new technologies and tools in the field of mine action to speed up the clearance of mines and explosives. For example, last month we applied a new approach to procuring demining services with a compensation programme for the first time. One large site was divided into two lots, for which different operators competed. The simultaneous work of several operators on the site will allow us to complete the work faster," said Ihor Bezkaravaynyi.
According to the Deputy Minister of Economy, the number of registered operators and their technical equipment allow for a more flexible approach to planning and implementing demining activities.
"As of the end of June, we had more than 100 operators and 278 demining vehicles. Thanks to our partners and our manufacturers who have organized the production of machinery and equipment, our capabilities will further improve," said Ihor Bezkaravaynyi.
For example, the agreement signed last month between Italy and UNDP to finance mine action in Ukraine opens up new prospects. Under the Agreement, EUR 1.5 million will be allocated for these purposes.
According to the official, one of the key areas of cooperation between the Ukrainian Government and partners is the introduction and application of the most advanced and innovative technologies in the industry. As part of this work, for example, in June, the SES received the Mines Eye remote mine detection system designed by Ukrainian inventors. The purchase of the system was made possible with the support of UNDP and funding from Luxembourg.
Other important mine action events in June included the opening by the Ministry of Defence of a training and testing complex for the development of the latest mine action technologies. The first event held at the complex was the exhibition 'Demining in Action', where two dozen Ukrainian manufacturers and developers presented their best practices.
