Ukraine's Energy Minister German Galushchenko met with a delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), headed by Director General Rafael Grossi. The parties discussed cooperation on ensuring nuclear and radiation safety in Ukraine amid ongoing russian military aggression, as well as the potential for further development of Ukraine's nuclear energy sector.
German Galushchenko thanked the IAEA for its efforts in monitoring the safety situation at Ukraine's nuclear power plants.
"The IAEA's presence at the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and its efforts to ensure nuclear and radiation safety at the facility are crucial. We also greatly value the permanent IAEA missions at Ukraine's other nuclear power plants. A very positive development in our cooperation has been the establishment of IAEA missions at the transmission system operator's substations, which are critical for nuclear power generation," the Minister noted.
Rafael Grossi emphasised the IAEA's unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine during this challenging time, marking his 12th personal visit since the start of 2022.
The parties addressed the threats posed by russia's occupation of Europe's largest nuclear power plant, Ukraine's ZNPP. Galushchenko stressed that only a licensed Ukrainian operator can ensure compliance with safety standards and the safe operation of the facility, underscoring that the ZNPP must be returned to Ukraine's full and sovereign control.
The discussion also focused on cooperation in developing Ukraine's nuclear energy potential.
Rafael Grossi stated that nuclear energy had been a vital pillar for Ukraine during challenging times, ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply amid a major crisis. He noted that Ukraine was among the countries with the highest expertise and experience in nuclear technologies worldwide, which provided it with a significant competitive and technological advantage. He expressed the view that further investment in nuclear energy was clearly the smartest path, both technologically and economically, and that few countries had such an opportunity, which Ukraine should fully embrace.
German Galushchenko highlighted Ukraine's strong human resource potential for advancing nuclear energy and its unique experience in operating nuclear units under wartime conditions.
"Despite constant attacks by the occupiers, Ukraine remains a global leader in the nuclear energy sector. Our specialists possess unique, invaluable skills in operating under attack conditions. With the support of international partners, I am confident we will continue to develop this sector," the Minister emphasised.
