The President: Significantly increasing military support for Ukraine is essential

On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with the leaders of NATO's eastern and northern flank countries at the Vilnius Summit to discuss continued support for Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also took part in the meeting.

President Gitanas Nausėda stressed that Ukraine's security and defense are inseparable from the security of Europe. "We must be clear: significantly increasing military support for Ukraine is essential. Our priority should be to swiftly restore the capabilities of Ukraine's armed forces, strengthen its military power, and ensure effective deterrence in place," he underlined.

The Head of State also called for greater investment in Ukraine's defense industry, pooling of resources, streamlined public procurement procedures, and arms deliveries that reflect the reality on the battlefield.

"Lithuania's total military aid to Ukraine can reach €1 billion this year. We've pledged to allocate at least 0.25% of our GDP annually to military support for Ukraine—and we are surpassing that target. We are proud that the Nordic and Baltic countries together are among the top contributors of military assistance to Ukraine, providing over €26 billion to date," the Lithuanian leader stated.

Addressing the topic of peace talks, Gitanas Nausėda noted that Russia continues to use delay tactics to buy time and sustain its aggression. The President stressed the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia to achieve a real ceasefire, while simultaneously reinforcing Ukraine's position for any future negotiations.

"Peace must be just and lasting. Lithuania will never recognize Russia's claims to the occupied territories. Demands such as Ukraine's demilitarization, NATO non-accession, or the holding of new elections would mean interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation," Gitanas Nausėda pointed out.

The Lithuanian leader underscored the urgency of imposing additional sanctions against Russia to seriously undermine its financial capabilities.
