On Thursday, President Gitanas Nausėda had a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Lithuanian and Ukrainian leaders discussed the upcoming informal European Council meeting, plans to bolster European defense, and prospects for peace talks in Ukraine.

President Gitanas Nausėda emphasized that Ukraine has been heroically resisting Russian aggression for nearly three years, demonstrating remarkable resilience. According to the Head of State, the lessons Ukraine has learned on the battlefield and the innovations it is implementing are invaluable for advancing Europe's defense industry.

On potential peace talks, the Gitanas Nausėda underscored that it is Ukraine—not the aggressor—that has to define the terms of peace. "We are skeptical about the idea of ending the war with a 'quick deal.' We do not believe that a quick ceasefire will lead to sustainable peace. On the contrary, it may mean a moral defeat for the West and allow Russia to strengthen its military capabilities, further increasing the threat to Euro-Atlantic security as a whole," the Lithuanian leader underlined.

The President pointed out that any potential talks need to be grounded in respect for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, with strong and lasting security guarantees.

The Head of State reaffirmed that Lithuania will continue to firmly adhere to its commitments, allocating at least 0.25% of its GDP to Ukraine's security and defense, and that cooperation between the defense industries of both countries in military technology production will continue.

The conversation also addressed the upcoming conference, "Three Years, Countless Futures: Protecting Freedom and Ukraine's Children," which will be held at the Ukrainian Center in Vilnius to mark the third anniversary of Russia's war against Ukraine. The conference is being organized under the patronage of Lithuanian First Lady Diana Nausėdienė and Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska, in collaboration with the Embassy of Ukraine and Vytautas Magnus University.
