On October 16-17, President Gitanas Nausėda attended the European Council meeting in Brussels. The meeting, which primarily focused on security and continued support for Ukraine, was also attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

During the discussion that followed, President Gitanas Nausėda emphasized that Lithuania fully supports Ukraine and backs Ukraine's victory plan recently presented by President Zelenskyy.

"We need to take the necessary decisions to ensure that Ukraine wins, not just resists. It is important to provide Ukraine with all the military assistance it needs. Ukraine's request for increased firepower, including the ability to launch long-range strikes against military targets on Russian territory, is entirely legitimate. It is also necessary to provide Ukraine with €6.6 billion in support through the European Peace Facility as soon as possible," the President spoke.

The Head of State noted that Ukraine's energy sector is facing a challenging period as winter approaches, therefore, support in this area crucial. He emphasized that Lithuania is one of the most active countries in supporting Ukraine's energy sector.

According to the Lithuanian leader, it is essential to limit Russia's capacity to continue the war, and the EU's sanctions policy needs to continue against both Russia and the countries aiding it—namely, Belarus and Iran. President Gitanas Nausėda stressed that the 15th sanctions package should target liquefied natural gas, nuclear energy companies, banks, further limit the export of dual-use goods, and impose higher tariffs on Russian imports to the EU to weaken Russia's military capabilities.

During his discussions with EU colleagues, the Lithuanian leader drew attention to the recent public and brutal executions of Ukrainian soldiers by the Russian army, which is a blatant violation of the Geneva Convention Relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War. President Gitanas Nausėda stressed that these actions, which flout human rights and international law, must not be allowed to become the new norm. He reiterated the importance of continuing to hold Russia accountable for the war crimes committed in Ukraine.

At the European Council meeting in Brussels, European leaders will also discuss the situation in the Middle East, migration, the EU's competitiveness, and EU enlargement.
