President Gitanas Nausėda continues his working visit to Ukraine. On Thursday, he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss defense cooperation, assistance needs and the frontline situation.
During the meeting, the President underscored Lithuania's continued commitment to providing extensive support to Ukraine, with primary focus placed on military aid. He noted that allied support to Ukraine so far has been insufficient to defeat the aggressor, stressing the need to increase both its volume and pace. Lithuania is prepared to enhance defense cooperation and facilitate closer ties between defense industry companies.
The President underlined that Lithuania has pledged to allocate 0.25% of its GDP annually – approximately 190 million euros – to Ukraine's security and defense. He highlighted Lithuania's plans to explore purchasing short-range air defense systems for Ukraine and contributing 10 million euros towards Ukraine's Palianytsa long-range weaponry production.
Gitanas Nausėda pointed out that Lithuania calls on allies to promptly supply long-range missiles, fighter jets and air defense systems to Ukraine. Lithuania supports efforts to bolster ammunition supplies and reinforce Ukraine's air defense, as well as advocates lifting restrictions on Ukraine to conduct long-range strikes on Russian military facilities without restrictions.
The Lithuanian and Ukrainian leaders also discussed Ukraine's European integration.
"I believe that Ukraine's European path is the only viable path forward. Without Ukraine's accession to the European Union, the project of a peaceful, secure and prosperous Europe will not be completed. Despite the ongoing war in their country, Ukrainians have made significant progress in implementing reforms. Ukraine's EU membership is the best security guarantee for both Ukraine and Europe as a whole," the President said.
He further emphasized that Lithuania sees Ukraine's fight for freedom as its own and will stand with Ukrainians until victory.
