Yesterday 6 December, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jonatan Vseviov was on a visit to Berlin, where he met with his German counterpart Dr Thomas Bagger to discuss security in Europe, continued comprehensive support to Ukraine and European Union enlargement.

The meeting covered the implementation of the decisions of the Vilnius summit in July, including moving forward with the regional defence plans of NATO and reinforcing deterrence. "Estonia has decided to increase its defence spending because we are alert to and realistic about the threat Russia poses," he said. Vseviov added that the 2% of GDP on defence that has been agreed upon in the Alliance must be the minimum in the current geopolitical situation, because the world is facing several crises that will define our future.

Ahead of the European Council next week, they also spoke about launching accession talks with Ukraine and raising the cost of the war for Russia, including adopting additional sanctions. "Our best security guarantee is our comprehensive and unwavering support for Ukraine, which is fighting for all of Europe," Vseviov said, emphasising that the EU needed to act fast to adopt the necessary support for Ukraine, including the eighth package of the European Peace Facility. "The EU has promised to provide long-term support to Ukraine and now it is critical that there are no delays in the necessary support, including delivering ammunition to Ukraine."

During his visit, Vseviov also met with Dr Anna Lührmann, the Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany, and Dr Christian Aulbach, Deputy Head of the Department for Foreign and Security Policy at the Federal Chancellery.
