The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is allocating half a million euros worth of humanitarian aid to Ukraine to help it prepare for winter. The aid will reach the people of Ukraine through the Estonian Refugee Council and NGO Mondo, the strategic humanitarian partners of the Foreign Ministry.
An estimated 17.6 million people are in need of humanitarian aid in Ukraine, which is 40% of Ukraine's population. "Russia's aggression caused the most serious humanitarian crisis of 21st century Europe in Ukraine, and the people of Ukraine have shown extreme resilience," Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said. "Support for Ukraine in meeting its humanitarian needs is part of Estonia's comprehensive assistance and Ukraine continues to be a priority country in our humanitarian aid policy."
"Since the start of the full-scale war, an estimated 1.4 million homes have been damaged or destroyed in Ukraine; assistance needs are the greatest in regions close to the frontline," Tsahkna said. "The arrival of winter brings new needs - last winter we saw Russia's numerous attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure in violation of international humanitarian law."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is allocating €200 000 to the Estonian Refugee Council for buying solid fuels for the most vulnerable internally displaced civilians in Ukraine, and for Ukrainian refugees in Georgia to help them cope with winter conditions.
NGO Mondo is allocated nearly €301 000 for repairing and insulating two centres for internally displaced people in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, and for supplying heating devices, solid fuels and generators to eight refugee centres in the Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk oblasts.
