Statement by Russian Defence Ministry
31.08.2023
On 31 August 2023, Russian airspace control systems detected an aerial target over the Barents Sea approaching the state border of the Russian Federation.
Northern Fleet's MiG-31 fighter jet of alert air defence units was scrambled to identify the air target and prevent a possible violation of the Russian Federation state border.
The Russian fighter jet identified the aerial target as a Norwegian Air Force P-8A Poseidon base patrol aircraft.
After an approach of the Russian fighter jet, the foreign military aircraft made a U-turn away from the state border of the Russian Federation. There was no violation of the state border of the Russian Federation.
The flight of the Russian fighter jet was conducted in strict compliance with international rules for the use of airspace over neutral waters without crossing air routes and without dangerous approach to aircraft of a foreign state.
