On Thursday, President Gitanas Nausėda, attending the Ukrainian Independence Day celebrations at Sofia Square in Kyiv, expressed his unwavering belief in Ukraine's ultimate victory in its fight against Russia.

In his speech, delivered in Ukrainian, the President underlined that 32 years ago the Ukrainian people rose from oppression to a new life, a free future and the hope of justice.

"The brutal aggressor is trying to take all this, and more, away from you. By trampling on the norms of the civilized world, Russia is trying to erase the Ukrainian identity. By killing innocent people, it seeks to destroy the future of Ukraine and Europe," the President said, adding that Ukrainian resistance has set an unparalleled example of courage and resolve.

"The fire of sacred love for Homeland, which shone so brightly at the Maidan of Independence, is shining across the entire Ukraine today. It inspires free people all over the world," the President said.

Gitanas Nausėda reaffirmed that Lithuania - which from the very first days of the war has been passionately supporting and firmly standing behind Ukraine - will never recognize the occupation and annexation of Crimea and other Ukrainian territories. Lithuania will do its utmost to help Ukraine achieve victory which will bring peace, security, lasting prosperity, and the hope of justice for thousands of victims of Russian aggression and their loved ones. Lithuania will also help Ukraine to rebuild the infrastructure destroyed during the war.

"Our vision today is a strong Ukraine in a strong Europe. I believe that Ukraine will one day become a member of both the European Union and NATO. The aggressor will not determine Ukraine's destiny!" the President said.

Quoting the poet of Ukraine's national revival Taras Shevchenko, the President wished the Ukrainian people to fight and win with the help of God. "Long live, independent Ukraine!" the President said.
