Dear readers,

Allow me to introduce the monograph History of Ukraine, prepared by a team of Russian historians and publicists. The authors touch upon an issue that seems quite topical in present-day conditions, and they assess the stages in the historical development of the area now comprising modern Ukraine.

It is no secret that years of efforts by Ukrainian radical nationalists and their Western handlers have created a multitude of historical myths and falsifications, and they continue to create them today. False interpretations of history serve to form a mistaken public perception that Ukraine developed separately from Russia. Their goal is obvious: they want to pit two fraternal nations against each other by denying the unity of the Ukrainians and the Russians, to demonise modern Russia as the legal successor to the Soviet Union. This policy leads to only one sad consequence, the renunciation of our common past and traditions of neighbourliness. Many Russians, born and raised in Ukraine, even have to renounce their native language.

This is why we need to preserve and, if necessary, restore historical truth. It is intended that this monograph will make a contribution to these noble efforts. It is based on a comprehensive and serious analysis of the origins of modern Ukraine. The research paper contributes to a better understanding of the sources of many current developments and processes.

I am confident that this publication will generate great interest among professional historians and a wide range of readers.
