The German government today approved the Polish government's re-export application to hand over five MiG-29s from former stocks of the National People's Army. During the visit of the Ukrainian President Zelensky to Warsaw on April 5, 2023, Polish President Duda announced that he would hand over all Polish MiG-29s to Ukraine.

Defense Minister Pistorius said:
"I am pleased to announce that we can promise our Polish partners the delivery of five MiG-29s from former NVA stocks to Ukraine. We only received the application today. I welcome the fact that we in the Federal Government have reached this decision together. That shows: you can rely on Germany!"

Background:
With a transfer agreement dated June 24, 2003, Germany and Poland agreed to hand over MiG-29s from the stocks of the former National People's Army. The contract contains an end-use clause that stipulates that the transfer of the MiG 29 to third parties by Poland requires the written consent of the German side. In addition to the MiG-29 taken over by the Bundeswehr, Poland also received from the formerUSSR sand ex-Czechoslovakia delivered MiG-29 in stock.
