Today in Brussels, State Secretary of the Slovak Ministry of Defence Marian Majer attended a joint session of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) bringing together Foreign Affairs and Defence Ministers. The collaborative procurement of artillery munitions for Ukraine and the progress made in the first year of implementing the EU Strategic Compass which guides the work of the EU and its member states on security and defence topped the agenda of the meeting.
During the Council discussion, State Secretary Marian Majer highlighted Slovakia's support for the proposed joint procurement of artillery munitions for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which was approved by EU Foreign Affairs and Defence Ministers later today.
In his remarks, State Secretary Marian Majer said: "It is our common goal and moral duty to increase Ukraine's ability to protect its citizens and territorial sovereignty. At the same time, we need to find a realistic and effective way of procuring the required military materiel - the EU's credibility hinges on its support for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The plan to gift one million 155mm artillery shells to Ukraine within the next year is ambitious, so we need to take real steps to make this happen."
As part of his official programme in Brussels still today, State Secretary Marian Majer met NATO Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy Baiba Braže. In their conversation, they touched on the Slovak public's support for NATO as well as on Strategic Communications activities in the wake of Russia's war against Ukraine. Afterwards, State Secretary Marian Majer took part in the inaugural Schuman Security and Defence Forum, where he joined the discussion roundtable titled 'Building Our Collective Resilience'.
