Prime Minister in Munich: supporting Ukraine today means Europe's peace of mind tomorrow
Republic of Poland - The Chancellery of the Prime Minister
21.02.2023
The 59th Munich Security Conference discussed assisting Ukraine in the face of war with Russia. The Munich conference provided an opportunity for many bilateral meetings and behind-the-scenes conversations. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki discussed security, including the building of an appropriate rapid reaction and deterrent force, with the President of the European Commission and the German Chancellor. Building a coalition of countries that would produce and co-finance munitions was also an important topic of discussion. The head of the Polish government also met with the President of Kurdistan, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the mayor of Kyiv.
Awareness of Russian aggression is growing
The head of the Polish government Mateusz Morawiecki stressed that on 24 February 2022, i.e. almost exactly one year ago, the free world, Western Europe, NATO became disillusioned with Russia. In the face of Russian aggression, more and more politicians, leaders and heads of state are convinced that the free world cannot allow the Kremlin regime to prevail.
The actions of present-day Russia bring back memories of colonialism, imperialism, nationalism and chauvinism. Therefore, to stop Putin's war machine, it is worth helping Ukraine. The future of the whole of Europe depends on its victory against the aggressor.
"If we want to ensure lasting peace in Europe, lasting security, then Ukraine must be integrated into the free world, integrated into the European Union, and eventually integrated into NATO as well. These are the foundations and core values that will lead us to long-term peace," stressed Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
Military support for Ukraine
Since the beginning of the Russian aggression, Poland, together with many other countries, has consistently supported Ukraine. We provide humanitarian and military aid. Our pressure and diplomatic efforts to deliver Western military equipment, including tanks, to Ukraine are yielding tangible results. The leaders of Western European countries, following in our footsteps, will also donate their tanks. Modern equipment will serve to further improve defence in the war against Russia.
"I have heard very many kind words addressed to Poland from the numerous US congressmen or senators present here, but also leaders, prime ministers of the Western world, that Poland has so consistently built for Ukraine a coalition that will provide modern Leopard tanks," noted the head of the Polish government.
Numerous bilateral meetings and behind-the-scenes discussions
This year's Munich Security Conference was attended by dozens of heads of state and government, ministers and representatives of key international organisations and institutions, including the UN, NATO and the EU.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki spoke with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz about building a rapid reaction and deterrent force. These are important signs that the security is being strengthened, which had already been discussed earlier at the NATO summit in Madrid. Additionally, the topic of European munitions production was raised during the summit.
"We also talk about very specific projects. President von der Leyen and I talked about munitions production projects. This was a topic discussed at the last European Council meeting in Brussels," said the head of the Polish government. He also added: "At the same time, we are also building a coalition of countries that would be ready to jointly produce and co-finance the production of munitions - I also discussed this with the Prime Minister of Estonia."
The head of the Polish government also met with the President of Kurdistan, Nechervan Idris Barzani, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, and the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko. Our diplomatic offensive continues.
Munich Security Conference
The Munich Security Conference, or MSC, has been organised since 1963. It is a prestigious forum for discussing current international security issues. The conference is attended by heads of state and government, foreign and defence ministers, parliamentarians and representatives of the media and academia.
