On February 8, a meeting of the UN Security Council on arms supplies to Ukraine was held, requested by the Russian Federation in response to the Western countries' recent decision to provide heavy weapon systems to Kiev. This significantly delays the prospects for resolving the current situation.
Popular rock musician and peace activist Roger Waters, invited by Russia, made an address that was of particular interest. The British musician debunked the belief, widespread in the West, that Russia's special military operation was "unprovoked." He also noted that the crisis in Ukraine mainly benefits defence companies, and called on the world's major players, as well as Kiev, to put aspirations for a long-term peace before those interests.
In turn, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya cited Western arms suppliers' growing profits and, citing American sources, pointed out that the funding Washington provides for Kiev's military needs ends up in major US arms manufacturers' bank accounts. He also stressed that the "peace initiatives" voiced by the Ukrainian leaders have nothing to do with a genuine desire to achieve peace.
The Western members of the Security Council again tried to shift the responsibility for the escalation of the crisis to Russia, turning a blind eye to their countries' open support for the coup d'état in Kiev in 2014, their consistent justification of the Kiev regime's violations of its obligations under the Minsk Package of Measures, which had been approved by the UN Security Council, as well as its ostentatious rejection of peace talks.
Russia will continue to use the UN Security Council as a platform to inform the wider international community of the true causes of the current crisis in Ukraine and the current situation in the context of the special military operation, including the US-led Western leaders' plans to prolong hostilities and prevent a political and diplomatic solution.
