Taipei, Jan. 4 (CNA) Taiwan has pledged an additional US$2 million to fund emergency electricity generation in three Ukrainian cities hard hit by Russia's invasion to help them survive the winter and overcome power outages due to air strikes on critical infrastructure.
The donation was confirmed with the virtual signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said in a statement.
The MOU was signed by Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮), Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov, Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Syenkevych, and Hanna Hopko, head of Ukrainian NGO ANTS Network, a group designated by Ukraine to do humanitarian work in Kherson, the statement said.
According to MOFA, the funds will go to buying electricity generation equipment, including generators and heating devices, to help people in three frontline cities -- Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, and Kherson -- that have been battered by Moscow, survive the winter, the statement said.
Wednesday's MOU signing came only days after Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine, received two high-capacity generators bought with Taiwanese government-donated funds for the same purpose.
According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, a total of 20 high-capacity generators are being purchased with a US$1 million donation Taiwan made to Kyiv in December 2022 via a similar MOU Wu signed with the city and the Kyiv-based charitable fund Darnychany, MOFA said.
