Tehran, IRNA -- The war in Ukraine has roots in the wrong policy of NATO's expansion to the east, said Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian in a telephone conversation with Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres on Friday, adding that the claims about Iran sending weapons to Russia for use in the war in Ukraine is a baseless accusation.
According to Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amirabdollahian added that Iran has not given Russia any weapons to be used in the Ukraine war, considering the accusation as baseless.
Referring to the domestic developments in Iran, he detailed on the moves made by the United States and a few Western countries in order to raise riots and assassination in Iran by using disinformation and intentional abuse of international mechanisms.
He also emphasized that Tehran considers diplomacy and dialogue as the best option, emphasizing that the Islamic Republic will never be tight-handed against other options.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for his part in the phone conversation stressed his efforts for the regional dialogue to be continued, and appreciated the support and constructive role of the Islamic Republic of Iran in this direction.
He expressed hope that Tehran's efforts to stop the war in Ukraine will lead to a ceasefire and a solution to the problem.
Guterres hailed the initiative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to form a national committee to deal with incidents inside Iran as a good step.
Emphasizing that dialogue and diplomacy are the right way to solve the problems of the region and the world, Guterres appreciated the role of the Islamic Republic of Iran in helping to solve the political crisis in Yemen and emphasized the need for Iran to continue playing a role in this field.
The both sides exchanged views on some regional and international issues, including Ukraine, Yemen and negotiations on a removal of anti-Iran sanctions.
