On September 22, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with a delegation of the Arab League (LAS) Contact Group on the Ukrainian Crisis on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria Ramtane Lamamra, Foreign Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt Sameh Shoukry, Foreign Minister of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Ayman Safadi, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Iraq Fuad Hussein, Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit and others.
Sergey Lavrov spoke in detail about the causes of the Ukrainian crisis, which was the result of the 2014 coup supported by a number of Western countries, and updated the contact group on the situation in Ukraine in the context of Russia's special military operation. At the same time, he emphasised that Russia's unconditional priorities were the protection of the civilian population of Donbass, demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine.
Russia praised the Arab League's balanced position on this issue, which was reaffirmed during the latest meeting of the Arab League foreign ministers' council, held in Cairo on September 6, 2022.
The parties underscored the importance of continued cooperation between Russia and the Arab League, including in the format of the Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum.
