On April 4, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths.
They had an in-depth discussion about pressing items on the international humanitarian agenda with an emphasis on the situation in Ukraine. The Russian side provided detailed assessments of the events in the town of Bucha near Kiev, emphasising that what happened there was an outright provocation aimed at portraying Russia as guilty of crimes that had been committed after the Russian Armed Forces had withdrawn from that town.
With regard to the situation in Ukraine in general, it was mentioned that it was important to provide urgent and comprehensive help to everyone in need in the Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics, without politicisation, discrimination or any preconditions. In turn, Martin Griffiths underscored the UN humanitarian wing's readiness to assist the efforts to establish regular supplies for civilians and to make arrangements for the safe evacuation of everyone who wished to leave combat areas.
In addition, the parties reaffirmed their mutual commitment to continuing and expanding interaction between Russia and UN OCHA, as well as other specialised UN agencies in the interests of effectively addressing pressing humanitarian issues around the world.
