Taipei, March 1 (CNA) Taiwan has joined global efforts to provide humanitarian relief to Ukraine by sending medical devices and supplies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Tuesday.

In a statement, MOFA said Taiwan flew about 27 metric tons of medical supplies to Frankfurt on a China Airlines flight that left Taoyuan International Airport on Monday at 11:50 p.m.

The shipment will be transferred to Ukraine through an appropriate channel after it arrives in Germany, MOFA said.

The first batch of supplies from Taiwan consists of medications and medical devices, the ministry said, without providing any further detail.

According to the latest reports, the Russian invasion of Ukraine that began on Feb. 24, 2022, has resulted in more than 500,000 Ukrainians fleeing the country and another 150,000 being displaced internally.

Several reports also indicated stepped up efforts by Russian forces to batter Ukraine on Monday, including an acceleration of its bombardment of parts of Kharkiv, the country's second largest city.

MOFA said Taiwan provided the medical supplies based on humanitarian considerations.

Last week, Taiwan announced that it would follow the United States and others, including the European Union, Japan, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand, in sanctioning Moscow.
