KIEV, May 8 -- Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenkosaid here Friday that a total of 1,675 Ukrainian servicemen were killed during the bloody conflict in eastern regions, which has raged since April 2014.
'In general, 1,675 Ukrainian soldiers sacrificed their lives for our country, for our inevitable victory,' Poroshenko said, while speaking at the ceremonial meeting of the parliament dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the victory over Nazism in Europe.
Overall, almost 7,000 Ukrainian citizens were killed as the result of hostilities in Donetsk and Lugansk regions, Poroshenko said, adding that about 1,000 people are still listed as missing.
Although a fragile ceasefire has been in place in the combat area since mid-February, clashes between government forces and pro-independence insurgents still persist, with the two warring sides frequently blaming each other for violations of the truce.
Government military spokesman Andriy Lysenko said two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and 26 wounded in battles with insurgents over the past 24 hours.
There were no reports about civilians or rebel casualties in the last day.
