Earlier it was reported, that Barack Obama has decided not to send offensive weapons to Kiev after talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The United States are still considering the option to provide lethal assistance to Ukraine, but there is no time frame of when they may reach a decision, US Principal Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Brian McKeon said on Tuesday.

"We are still working in the inner agency on reviewing a number of options including lethal defense of weapons, but I cannot give you a timetable on when we might have a decision on additional assistance," McKeon stated in a testimony to the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

On Monday, US media reported that the German Ambassador to the United States Peter Wittig had said that German Chancellor Angela Merkel convinced US President Barack Obama not to deliver lethal defensive weapons to Ukraine at this time.

Members of the US Senate Armed Services Committee, led by Senator John McCain, have been calling on the Obama administration to delivered weapons to Ukraine to defend itself.

McKeon added he could not speak about the Obama-Merkel meeting during the German Chancellor's visit to Washington, DC in February.

In December, Obama signed into law the Ukraine Freedom Support Act that authorizes providing lethal assistance to Kiev and introducing new sanctions against Russia.

Russian officials have condemned the law, arguing that Moscow would implement retaliatory measures if the full provisions of the bill are implemented.
