The presence of US military vessels in the Black Sea does not look like a desire for a political settlement of the Ukrainian conflict, according to a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The presence of US military vessels in the Black Sea goes against claims by Washington of its commitment to a peaceful resolution for the Ukrainian conflict, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday.
'This somehow contradicts the public statements by the [US] administration in favor of political settlement of conflict in Ukraine,' Alexander Lukashevich told journalists in Moscow.
The Russian diplomat expressed hope that US military command is aware that such actions do not look like a desire for a political settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.
'All together this is a very unpleasant factor and, as it seems to me, the military command should understand that such provocative actions may have the most serious consequences to the course of the settlement of this conflict,' Lukashevich stressed.
The diplomat added that military presence close to a regional conflict zone is a very dangerous maneuver that could lead to what he described as 'different unpleasant consequences.'
NATO has been increasing its military presence close to the Russian border since Crimea reunified with Russia in March 2014.
In January, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced plans to boost the bloc's military presence in eastern Europe, also increasing the number of warships in the Black Sea.
On Wednesday, NATO Maritime Command announced that six NATO warships from the US, Canada, Italy, Germany, Turkey and Romania arrived to the Black Sea to start joint exercises.
