The Ukrainian foreign ministry says negotiations between the three-party contact group and representatives of the self-proclaimed republics of eastern Ukraine have failed to deliver any practical results.

'The contact group has recently conducted negotiations that brought few results and no agreements were reached in this video conference with representatives of some districts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions yesterday,' said foreign ministry spokesman Alexei Makeyev on Saturday.

The Ukrainian official blamed the failure of the talks, which were held on Friday, on the pro-Russian sides who are allegedly "not expressing their readiness to follow the agreements signed in Minsk'

The Minsk ceasefire deal was inked by the representatives of Ukraine, Russia, and self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk republics in the Belarusian capital on September 5 last year. The truce has been almost daily violated by both the Ukrainian military and pro-Russia forces in eastern Ukraine.

The trilateral contact group on Ukraine includes the representatives of Kiev, Moscow and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

The two mainly Russian-speaking regions of Donetsk and Lugansk in eastern Ukraine have been the scene of deadly clashes between pro-Russia protesters and the Ukrainian army since Kiev's military operation started in mid-April in a bid to crush the protests.

Violence intensified in May after the two flashpoint regions held local referendums in which their residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from Ukraine and joining the Russian Federation.

According to the latest figures released by the United Nations, more than 4,700 people have been killed in the fighting.
