Ukrainian government troops have suspended their military operations in the volatile eastern parts of the country in preparation for a ceasefire on the front line of the conflict.

'The Ukrainian military have suspended all combat actions and are ready for the Day of Silence, but if separatists attack we will fire in response,' a Ukrainian army spokesman said on Tuesday.

Ukraine and the pro-Russia forces agreed on December 9 to stop fighting across the eastern conflict zone under the terms of a Kremlin-brokered ceasefire.

Also on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the contact group on Ukraine, comprised of pro-Russia forces fighting the Ukrainian government in the east and officials from Kiev, Moscow and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), would meet soon to discuss the implementation of measures to uphold the truce in eastern Ukraine.

'In the coming days, a meeting of the contact group is planned, in which will be discussed a plan ... with the aim of a final ceasefire,' Lavrov said.

Ukraine's mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have witnessed deadly clashes between pro-Russia forces and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations to silence the pro-Moscow protests in mid-April.
