Ukrainian military officials say 12 pro-Russia armed men have been killed in attacks on buildings at Donetsk airport despite a ceasefire between Kiev and the pro-Moscow forces.

Military spokesman, Andriy Lysenko, told journalists on Saturday that the armed men were killed as they were trying to storm the airport.

'The airport of Donetsk remains the priority target for terrorists. Yesterday they resorted to a few, fortunately unsuccessful, attempts to storm it. Twelve (fighters) were killed during the attacks," Lysenko said, adding, "That is the biggest single loss among rebels since September 5 [when the ceasefire agreement between Kiev and pro-Russia forces took effect].'

Lysenko also stated that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed during the past 24 hours, but did not give any further details.

The pro-Russia forces have not shown any reaction.

The ceasefire between the Kiev government and pro-Russia forces was signed in September after negotiations in the Belarusian capital city of Minsk among former Ukrainian president, Leonid Kuchma, who represented the government in Kiev, Alexander Zakharchenko, the leader of pro-Russian forces in Donetsk and Igor Plotnitsky, the leader of pro-Russian forces in the Lugansk region.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's military and pro-Russian forces accuse each other of violating the truce which followed five months of fierce fighting in the east.

The United Nations says over 3,500 people have been killed during the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
