The Ukrainian government has accused pro-Russia forces of jeopardizing a shaky ceasefire in the volatile eastern regions of the country.

Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council spokesman, Volodymyr Polyovy, said in a statement on Sunday that the fragile nine-day truce between pro-Russia forces and the Ukrainian army has been threatened by intensifying attacks against government forces.

The actions by pro-Russia activists are "threatening" the realization of the peace plan, Polyovy claims.

The comment came a day after fighting flared up near the Donetsk airport in eastern Ukraine. The city council said several residential buildings near the airport were damaged during overnight shelling, but reported no casualties.

This is while, on Saturday, pro-Russia forces defending a checkpoint near the village of Olenivka, south of Donetsk accused the Ukrainian army of violating the truce.

"From our side, nobody is shooting but they are breaking the rules, everybody in the world knows it,' a commander for the forces said.

The ceasefire agreement was reached between Kiev and the pro-Russians on September 5, after Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko hammered out a compromise deal aimed at ending the heavy fighting.

The Ukrainian military and pro-Russians have repeatedly accused each other of violating the ceasefire since it came into effect.

Ukraine's mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have witnessed deadly clashes between pro-Moscow forces and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations to silence pro-Russians in mid-April.
