Kiev's ambassador to the European Union has called for "large-scale" military assistance from Brussels, amid the ongoing conflict in Eastern Ukraine.

The request on Thursday comes as Kiev and Washington claimed Russian troops were operating in the eastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian ambassador to Brussels Kostiantyn Yelisieiev called for EU leaders who are to meet Saturday to decide on "large-scale military and technical assistance to Ukraine in order to stop the aggressor."

Earlier on Thursday, a senior NATO official claimed that more than a thousand Russian troops were operating inside Ukraine.

Russian forces "support (so-called) separatists, fighting with them and fighting amongst them," said NATO's Brigadier General Nico Tak.

NATO has released images which aledgely show substantial activities in areas near the border with Ukraine.

The allegations by NATO come a week before an alliance summit in Cardiff in Wales, where possible action against Russia over the crisis in Ukraine will top the agenda.

EU leaders will also discuss the Ukraine developments at a summit on Saturday.

After the summit, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko will meet European Commission head Jose Manuel Barroso in Brussels, as well as EU President Herman Van Rompuy.

The Western powers accuse Moscow of having a hand in the crisis in eastern Ukraine, which erupted when Kiev launched military operations in April to silence pro-Russia protests, but the Kremlin rejects the accusation.
