The eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk comes under fresh shelling, as fighting between government troops and pro-Russian forces continues.

At least one person has been killed and nearly a dozen have been injured in the new round of army attacks on the pro-Russians' positions in residential areas.

The escalation comes after pro-Russian forces announced their readiness on Saturday to strike a ceasefire with the government in Kiev.

They said the decision is aimed at preventing a "humanitarian catastrophe" in the wake of shortage of food and fuel in the restive region.

Pro-Russians have also asked the government to accept Russia's aid mission to the region.

Kiev recently stepped up its operations around Donetsk and Lugansk.

The ongoing violence has also forced thousands of civilians to abandon their homes. Local authorities have warned of a looming humanitarian crisis as water, food and fuel supplies have dried up in the eastern region.

Ukraine's mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have witnessed deadly clashes between pro-Russia protesters and the Ukrainian army since the government in Kiev launched military operations in mid-April in a bid to crush the pro-Russia protests.

According to the United Nations, about 1,400 people have been killed in the military operations.
