16 July 2014, 19:42 - Militia fighters in the self-proclaimed Lugansk People's Republic (LPR) have encircled the Ukrainian government forces near the border checkpoint in Izvaryno, with the Ukrainian army sustaining tangible losses, Interfax reports with reference to the Novorossiya agency.

'Militiamen fired grenade launchers against Ukrainian special forces from Kirovohrad at the Izvaryne border checkpoint in the Lugansk region. A source said eight soldiers were killed and around ten injured. The Ukrainian side also reported having been encircled in Izvaryno, the punitive forces' self-propelled artillery launcher has been knocked down,' the statement said.

Meantime, 'in the Sverdlovsk district of the Lugansk region, militiamen fired artillery and mortars against Ukrainian troops from the 72nd brigade. There is no data on army losses,' the agency also reported.

A spokesperson for LPR told reporters that militiamen pushed the Ukrainian troops back from the city of Krasnodon which is close to the Izvaryno border checkpoint.

Meanwhile, the National Security and Defense Council spokesman, Andrey Lysenko said during a briefing on Wednesday that active fighting continues in the east of the country but Ukrainian troops retain control over the populated area they seized earlier.

He confirmed that at the moment the most fierce fighting is taking place in the Izvaryno area, as well as in Amvrosiyevka and Marynovka.
