Slavyansk militia reports that fighting continues despite ceasefire
28 June 2014, 13:18 -- Hostilities are under way in the Donetsk region, despite the agreement on ceasefire, a representative of the Slavyansk militia told RIA Novosti on Saturday.
'Shelling in the area of Slavyansk and in the area of Kramatorsk, near Slavyansk, goes on since the night,' the agency's interlocutor said. He said that the shooting was conducted from the direction of the units subordinate to Kiev.
Last night, the term of the truce, agreed upon by the Ukrainian authorities and the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, expired. On Friday, the EU demanded to implement measures to de-escalate the crisis by Monday, and Poroshenko prolonged the truce until Monday counting on the fulfillment of these requirements. On Friday, when the President's plan to prolong the ceasefire became known, the militia expressed readiness to observe the truce.
On Saturday, Minister of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov has written on his page in Facebook that last Friday, the law-enforcers had captured a checkpoint near the city of Slavyansk, Donetsk region. 'Checkpoint 1 occupied again by soldiers of the law-enforcers' special operation. Reinforced by tanks, means of antitank defense,' Avakov wrote, commenting on his own post about battles on the outskirts of Slavyansk.
