Three people have been killed after a Ukrainian helicopter crashed in the country's Kharkov region.

According to reports, the Mi-8 helicopter was delivering supplies to Ukrainian forces in the east of the country when it crashed in Chuguevsky district of the Kharkov on Sunday.

"On June 21, the regional Interior Ministry department unit received a report from the search and rescue emergencies center's officer on duty stating that a Mi-8 helicopter of the Ukrainian emergency situations state service with a crew of three people on board has disappeared from radars in the vicinity of the village of Vasishchevo of the Kharkov region," Ukraine's Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

The ministry said that the helicopter was found in a nearby forest on Sunday morning, adding that the search operation which lasted for 24 hours included 39 aircraft and vehicles and some 500 personnel.

Violation of air traffic regulations is considered as the main cause of the accident.

Ukrainian troops have been carrying out military operations since mid-April to reportedly suppress pro-Russia protesters in the east of the country.

The government in Kiev says it is targeting armed protesters, but reports say many civilians have been caught in the shelling that has been going on for days.

According to figures published by Ukraine's Health Ministry, the death toll from clashes between Ukrainian and pro-Moscow forces has reached 270 in the eastern provinces of Donetsk and Lugansk since the operations started this spring.
