Ukrainian army shell military unit near Donetsk, destroy radar stations
21 June 2014, 13:14 -- Radar stations were destroyed as a result of shelling of an air defence unit, located in Avdeevka, near Donetsk, the Donetsk Vesti newspaper reports with reference to a source in the military unit. According to the newspaper, Saturday morning, at 5 a.m. local time (2 am GMT), militiamen attacked the air defense unit located in Avdeevka.
'All radar stations were destroyed. There were no casualties. The shooting was conducted from mortars and heavy weapons,' the interlocutor of the newspaper said.
Earlier, the militiamen several times presented an ultimatum to the servicemen of the air defence unit in Avdeevka demanding from them to surrender, but the law enforcers refused.
The military unit in Avdeevka is a part of the single radar system of Ukraine, which plays the role of an air 'umbrella' for control of the border from the air.
Since mid April, Kiev holds a military operation aimed at suppressing supporters of independence in the East of Ukraine, who did not recognize the legitimacy of the new Ukrainian authorities after the February coup d'état. Moscow has called this special operation, which had already resulted in numerous casualties on both sides, punitive and encourages Kiev to immediately stop it.
Friday, after the security forces reported they had established control on the borders, the President of Ukraine gave an order to all security units involved in the special operation in the East of the country to cease fire for a week. Meanwhile, the security forces will fight back if they are attacked. However, clashes on the border continue even after the announcement of the ceasefire.
The President also presented a peace plan to resolve the situation in the East of Ukraine. The plan consists of 15 steps and provides security guarantees for all parties to the negotiations: exemption from criminal liability for those who lay down their arms and have not committed serious crimes, as well as release of hostages.
