Ukrainian army to retaliate if federalization supporters break ceasefire - Poroshenko

21 June 2014, 19:34 -- Ukrainian President Petr Poroshenko on Saturday threatened retaliation if the anti-government militia groups in eastern Ukraine breach the terms of the week-long unilateral ceasefire that he declared on Friday as part of his peace plan. Poroshenko issued the warning during a visit to Ukraine's chief military hospital in Kiev, where servicemen wounded in battle in the east of the country are being treated, the president's office said in a statement.

Poroshenko told the wounded soldiers about 'his visit to the site of the anti-terrorist operation,' the statement said.

'The head of state said that, in cases of non-compliance with the terms of the peace plan, the Ukrainian military would take appropriate action. He was commenting on reported violations of the ceasefire regime'.

'Ukraine wants peace and wants the situation to be settled in a peaceful way,' the statement quoted the president as saying. Poroshenko said his peace plan 'has been met with approval by the world community,' and received support from the US and French presidents, Barack Obama and Francois Hollande, as well as German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and British Prime Minister, David Cameron.

'We have received powerful support for our plan and a high assessment of the actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,' Poroshenko said. The ceasefire expires on June 27.

Poroshenko's plan of crisis settlement in east Ukraine to be valid till June 27

President of Ukraine Petr Poroshenko has signed a decree, including a plan for a peaceful settlement of the situation in the East of the country, approved on June 16 by the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC). The plan will be in force from 10:00 pm local time (07:00 pm GMT) on June 20 until the same time on June 27. The decree was published on the President's website on Saturday.

'To implement the plan the President of Ukraine's plan for a peaceful settlement of the situation in the Eastern regions of Ukraine from 10:00 pm local time (07:00 pm GMT) on June 20 till 10:00 pm on June 27, 2014', the decree says.
