Members of the self-proclaimed government of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) have made a desperate call for aid for the residents of Slavyansk, Press TV reports.

The call by the DPR officials came as a large number of residents in the eastern Ukrainian city are going without food and medical aid amid Kiev's military operations.

"There is a huge humanitarian disaster and the people in Slavyansk really need help," said Alexander Borodai, the DPR's prime minister.

According to Borodai, the Red Cross has sent aid; however, the help has not arrived as "it is stuck in places that are controlled by our enemies."

In addition, Denis Pushilin, the self-proclaimed republic's parliament speaker, said there have been instances where people, claiming to be affiliated with the DPR, have stolen aid heading to Slavyansk.

This comes as schools, houses, institutions and even an orphanage have in recent weeks been targeted by Kiev's military in Slavyansk.

On June 4, Ukraine's President-elect Petro Poroshenko met with US President Barack Obama to discuss the ongoing crisis in the eastern European country. Obama announced he would be sending Kiev an additional USD 5 million in military equipment.

Ukraine's mainly Russian-speaking parts in the east have been the scene of deadly clashes between pro-Russia protesters and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations in the southeastern regions in mid-April in a bid to root out the demonstrations there.

Poroshenko has ruled out negotiations with the pro-Russians, vowing to continue military operations in the country's southeastern provinces.
