Ukraine must not be 'muscle-flexing' exercise for US - Russian envoy to UN
3 June 2014, 22:25 -- The situation in Ukraine must not be used by the United States to build up its global military presence, said Vitaly Churkin, Russia's Ambassador to the United Nations. 'If politics consists of taking advantage of the situation in Ukraine in order to flex muscles, this will only hurt the common international cooperation,' Churkin told reporters on Tuesday.
He also stated that Moscow is hoping for swift passage of its humanitarian motion over Ukraine, proposed to the United Nations Security Council. 'We believe it is very important to pass this resolution fairly quickly,' Churkin told journalists on Tuesday. 'It can play a certain role in ending violence in Ukraine,' he said.
The continuation of the events taking place in the southeastern regions of Ukraine will lead to aggravation of the situation in general, the ambassador emphasized. 'These are densely-populated areas of Ukraine, it has already turned into something tragic, we are seeing an escalation. Kiev continues using force, this is a very wrong approach,' the ambassador said.
'The initial discussion with our colleagues in the Council was not very reassuring. Some of our colleagues believe the situation can be settled by force, which is a gross mistake. The Security Council must look for peaceful resolution of any problems,' Churkin said.
The discussion of the draft resolution will continue, he added.
West tries to politicize Russian draft lodged with UN Security Council - Churkin
Western representatives to the UN Security Council are trying to politicize the Russian draft of a humanitarian resolution on Ukraine, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said. 'They have mentioned things which obviously politicize the issue,' he told reporters after the UN Security Council had given preliminary consideration to the Russian draft.
'We suggested that an emphasis actually be put on the termination of violence and the creation of conditions for the solution of humanitarian problems so that the sides build humanitarian corridors, civilians wishing to leave the dangerous regions can do so, and the Red Cross and humanitarian organizations can deliver assistance. Yet they gave rather cynical references to the need for additional reports, additional studies of the issue and so on,' Churkin said.
'Hence, I believe the work on our draft will not be easy,' the diplomat said. 'We have yet to decide what our next step in the work on this resolution will be.'
Russia lodged a draft resolution aimed at the immediate termination of violence and the creation of humanitarian corridors in Ukraine with the UN Security Council on Monday.
Russia submits draft resolution on Ukraine to UN Security Council
Russia has submitted a draft resolution on Ukraine to the UN Security Council, the Russian Ambassador to the UN, Vitaly Churkin told. The draft presumes an immediate ending of violence and the setting up of humanitarian corridors. 'We submitted a draft resolution of the Security Council on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine,' Churkin said after a meeting, which the Council had held behind closed doors.
He stressed the absence of politicizing in the document.
'It demands an immediate end to violence and the setting up of humanitarian corridors, which will make it possible for the population to get safely out of the areas engulfed by combat operations,' Churkin said.
