WASHINGTON, May 28, 2014 – Tens of thousands of Russian troops remain encamped on the Ukrainian border, a Pentagon spokesman said today.
Some troop withdrawals have been observed, Army Col. Steve Warren said, but the movements aren't yet significant in comparison with the large numbers of troops left behind in the border region.
"We have seen a continued repositioning of Russian forces and equipment away from the border. … This is encouraging and we hope they continue to do so," Warren told reporters.
In addition to personnel, the withdrawals include some heavy equipment such as tanks and armored vehicles, the colonel said. "Of the forces that remain, some are conducting operations that appear to be preparations for withdrawal," he added.
Despite these movements, the remaining forces continue to represent a credible threat to the stability of the region, Warren said.
