Lugansk People's Republic turns to UN for recognition

19 May 2014, 21:01 -- The parliament of the self-proclaimed 'Lugansk People's Republic' has sent a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon requesting recognition of the republic's sovereignty and independence. 'We are convinced that it is our natural right deriving from the founding international documents to refer an appeal of the people of the Lugansk People's Republic to the international community and request that recognition of our state system be considered,' the letter says.

'In accordance with the generally accepted international standards, a people's right to self-determination must constitute the groundwork of political decisions and each state must respect this right. The Lugansk People's Republic intends to build its relations with other states on the basis of equality, peace, good neighborly relations and other generally recognized principles of political, economic and cultural cooperation,' the letter says.

'A referendum on state independence was held in the Lugansk region on May 11 and 96.2% of the voters cast their ballots for the region's future as a sovereign state,' the authors write. 'The Lugansk People's Republic's independence was proclaimed the day after.

The LuganskPeople's Republic's Assembly has been set up today, its constitution has been adopted, and the leader of the Lugansk People's Republic has been elected alongside other ministers,' the letter says. The deputies supported the letter unanimously. The letter was sent to the UN on May 19.
