
Self-defense forces fight for TV tower, checkpoints in Slavyansk - self-defense HQ
7 May 2014, 11:06 -- The Slavyansk self-defense forces are trying to regain control over several checkpoints and the television tower in the suburbs of Slavyansk, a representative of the city's self-defense forces told Interfax. 'Fighting is going on in the area of the television tower in the village of Andreyevka and in the area of the checkpoints in the village of Kombikormochny and in the area around the gas station. We are regaining control over the checkpoints,' the source said.
There is currently no information on casualties.
On Monday, a representative of the Slavyansk self-defense forces headquarters told Interfax that Ukrainian troops had taken over the television tower.
'We have to retreat behind the city limits. The enemy has entered the territory of Slavyansk,' the source said then.
Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said on that day that 'the Slavyansk television tower is now fully controlled by the Ukrainian authorities. [The tower] currently broadcasts Ukrainian channels.'
Gunshots heard across Slavyansk as Ukrainian security forces launched an attack - militia
In Slavyansk of the Donetsk region Ukrainian soldiers started the attack. People can hear gunshots on the outskirts of the city. The alarm notifies residents about the attack.
On Wednesday night Ukrainian troops led an active attack against the forces of militias in Slavyansk the north of Donetsk region, reports the UNIAN agency.
It is reported that alarm went off in the city; people can also hear gunfire shots.
Mass anti-government protests began in the southeastern regions of Ukraine at the end of February 2014. They were a response of local residents on violent change of power in the country and the subsequent attempt by the Verkhovna Rada to cancel the law granting the Russian language the status of regional.
Ukraine's security forces surrounding Slavyansk prevent civilians from leaving the city
Ukraine's security forces that surrounded Slavyansk are preventing civilians from leaving the city and fire at their cars and other transport vehicles, a spokesman for the Slavyansk self-defence forces told the Russian news agenct by phone. 'The city is surrounded, with civilians being prevented from leaving it. Recently, a family with a little child tried to leave the city in a car. However, the vehicle was fired upon. At least two people were killed as a result of the fire for effect,' the spokesman said.
The representative of the volunteer corps said, 'The so far unidentified people wearing a black uniform' had appeared at checkpoints around the city.
'We can suppose that those are Right-Sector people. However, we lack exact data on that score yet,' he said.
'Besides, we have available data on the bringing of artillery guns up to Slavyansk, and on the organization of positions for firing from a salvo-fire Grad system, in particular,' the representative of the self-defence forces said.
