Donetsk forms first regiment of Republican Army
4 May 2014, 19:52 -- Authorities of the Donetsk People's Republic announced forming the first regiment of the republican army that will unite all the self-defense forces, a thousand people have already self-subscribed as volunteers, commissar of the Eastern Front movement Nikolai Solntsev told RIA Novosti Sunday.
'A decision to form a regiment, Donetsk regiment has been taken,' Solntsev said. 'The speaker of the People's Republic ordered. At the moment we form the regiment, the task is to be determined,' Solntsev said.
According to the commissar, Donetsk Republic's authorities have started to give gun licenses.
'800 people from the Eastern Front movement have subscribed to the regiment, many will do so later as many of our folks are currently involved in operations,' Solntsev said.
Nikolai Solntsev however didn't specify how the regiment will interact with the so-called Donbass self-defense forces.
'Everything is underway, when it (the regiment) is formed, everything will be in a single management structure,' Solntsev said.
'As far as I understand, Donbass self-defense forces will be the base of the regiment,' the deputy commander of the people's militia in Donbas said.
'That why we eye further expansion: establishment of a regiment, then a division, then liberation of the republic's territory and the entire South-East of Ukraine,' he added.
