2 May 2014, 15:13 -- Ukrainian authorities have breached their responsibilities in the April 17 Geneva announcement by starting military operations in the southeastern city of Slaviansk, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday. Moscow demands Ukrainian authorities to immediately halt punitive operation in Slavyansk - Foreign Ministry

Russia has demanded that the Ukrainian authorities halt their special operation in the southeastern city of Slaviansk, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

'We decisively demand that the West stop its destructive policies in regard to Ukraine and to those who have announced themselves the authorities in Kiev to immediately stop the punitive operation and any violence against its own people, to release political prisoners, and to provide complete freedom to journalists in their activities,' the statement reads.

Moscow concerned over punitive operation by Ukrainian law enforcers in Slavyansk

Moscow is concerned over the beginning of punitive operations in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Slavyansk, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

'Russia is concerned over the beginning of a punitive military operation in Slaviansk using terrorists from the Right Sector and other ultranationalist organizations,' the statement reads.

'As we have repeatedly warned, the use of the army against its own people is a crime and will lead Ukraine to a catastrophe,' the statement adds.

OSCE calls on Kiev to stop operation in Slavyansk

At Russia's request the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) has called on Kiev to stop the active phase of the special operation against federalists in the eastern city of Slaviansk, Russian Permanent Representative at OSCE Andrey Kelin said Friday.

'We undertake all the necessary demarches for the OSCE leadership to intervene and stop this operation,' Kelin said, adding that Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Swiss President are to get in touch with Ukraine's acting President Alexander Turchynov and acting Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenuk.

Kiev has launched an active phase of its special operation against the federalists in the eastern city of Slaviansk early Friday, using aviation and armored vehicles to crack down on the protesters.

'Ukrainians respond and say that the operation aims to surround and isolate Slaviansk,' Kelin said. 'We demanded to stop it, and if so then humanitarian corridors should be set for the civilians to leave the city, and the aviation flights should be suspended,' he added.

The military operation, according to Kelin, 'complicates implementation of the Geneva agreements and the work of OSCE observers' in Ukraine.'
