Ukraine closes 27 checkpoints on Crimean border

1 May 2014, 18:27 -- The Ukrainian authorities announced Thursday a decision to temporarily close 27 checkpoints along the border line in Crimea, the government said on the website. The decree, signed by the Cabinet of Ministers on April 30, says that the checkpoints are closed in line with the 'law on ensuring the rights and freedoms of citizens and the legal framework on the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine.'

After the March 16 referendum, in which more than 96 percent of Crimeans voted in favor of reunification, the republic became part of Russia. Russia introduced border control on the crossing points between its newest region of Crimea and Ukraine on April 25. The Russian Border Agency, Rosgranitsa, installed 15 block modules on the border, equipped due to a scheme of automobile border-crossing points.

The Ukrainian border service also started equipping its checkpoints. Russia plans to install other block modules in Crimea by late July. Crimea, previously an autonomous republic within Ukraine, refused to recognize the legitimacy of the government in Kiev which seized power as a result of a coup in February, instead rejoining Russia following a secession referendum.
