Russia urges immediate release of Ukraine's political prisoners
28 April 2014, 20:38 -- Moscow is deeply concerned about the high-profile arrests of public figures in southeastern Ukraine and other human rights abuses committed by the Ukrainian regime. 'We are deeply worried by the condition of the elected 'people's governor of Donetsk' Pavel Gubarev. He was kidnapped by the Kiev security service in early March and blamed for organizing mass disturbances and attempting to split Ukraine under farfetched charges. Gubarev was tortured and he went on an indefinite hunger strike,' the Russian Foreign Ministry said in connection with political reprisals practiced in Ukraine.
'On April 26, following our insistent requests to the International Committee of the Red Cross, observers of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's special monitoring mission in Ukraine were allowed to see Gubarev and they documented the above-mentioned abuses.
Importantly, Pavel Gubarev is not the only political prisoner of the Kiev regime. Media reports suggest that a witch-hunting campaign, the massive persecution of dissenters and political reprisals against all who dare to expressed disagreement with the Kiev leaders have begun in Ukraine,' the Russian Foreign Ministry said on its website.
Another alarming factor is media reports that large detention facilities are being built in Ukraine to accommodate thousands of illegal migrants, it said 'There is not such a large number of illegal immigrants in Ukraine, while the facilities being erected resemble fascist concentration camps. The question arises: does the Kyiv regime plan to drive disloyal citizens from southeastern regions to these detention camps?' the foreign ministry said.
'All of this evidence does not match the standards adopted by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the Council of Europe, and the obligation, assumed by Kiev in Geneva on April 17, to start a broad national dialogue and to launch a transparent and inclusive constitutional process,' it said.
'The Russian Foreign Ministry urges for the immediate release of Pavel Gubarev and other political prisoners of the Kiev regime. We are convinced that the leadership of the Council of Europe, of the OSCE and international rights organizations must rigorously condemn such human rights abuses and work to terminate political reprisals against the dissent by those who are in power in Kiev,' the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
