Ukrainian Right Sector urges Kiev to arm citizens
25 April 2014, 20:09 -- Dmitry Yarosh, the leader of the far-right Right Sector party, urged the new Kiev authorities to begin immediate mass armament of Ukrainian citizens.
'The Ukrainian government must start immediate mass armament of our citizens. Thereby I am addressing the commander in chief: Mr. Turchinov, (Ukraine's acting president appointed by the Verkhovna Rada), you must be fully aware of the responsibility that falls on your shoulders,' Yarosh said in an open letter to the Acting President, RIA reports.
The Right Sector is a major ally of the neo-Nazi Svoboda party led by Oleg Tyagnybok that became a member of the Ukrainian leading coalition following the overthrow of President Viktor Yanukovych in February.
The Right Sector was an important force at the Maidan protests that began in November in Kiev when its members took part in the seizure of administration buildings, stealing of weapons and clashes with security forces.
Currently the Right Sector radicals are suppressing pro-federalization protesters in eastern Ukrainian regions. Russia put the leader of Right Sector, Dmitry Yarosh, who is running for president in the upcoming May 25 election, on an international wanted list and charged him with inciting terrorism. Moscow has repeatedly urged Kiev to disarm illegal groups, including the Right Sector rebels.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said earlier this week that despite the Geneva agreement calling for the end of violence the Right Sector continues to stage its provocations in Ukraine.
These provocations already led to the death of people in the city of Slavyansk last Sunday as people were celebrating Easter. Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier claimed that 'No Right Sector or any other radical groups have been disarmed; no one in Kiev has vacated anything. It's just the opposite, these groups are beginning to be legalized.'
The Ukrainian government launched a major anti-terrorist operation in the country following weeks of pro-federalization rallies in a number of eastern Ukrainian cities.
The agreement brokered by top diplomats from Russia, Ukraine, the United States and the European Union on April 17 led to a temporary suspension of anti-terror measures but earlier on Wednesday the Security Service of Ukraine announced that the military operation had again entered an active phase.
