Kharkov authorities create checkpoints at borders with neighboring regions
19 April 2014, 13:25 -- Nineteen checkpoints have been created at the border of the Kharkov region of Ukraine with the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, and the authorities see the need for creating nine more, head of the Kharkov regional state administration, Igor Baluta says.
According to him, the checkpoints were built in Kupyanskyi, Barvinkivskyi, Izyumsky, Borovsky and Bliznyukovsky districts.
'Today, we see the necessity to build nine more checkpoints in the territory of Kupyanskyi, Borovsky, Izumsky and Bliznyukovsky districts,' said Baluta, whose words are cited by the press service of the Kharkov regional administration.
The Governor noted that the MIA and SBU employees and local activists are in charge of the checkpoints and searches of transport.
Since March, protest rallies of supporters of federalization are under way in the East of Ukraine – in Donetsk, Kharkov and Lugansk. Later, the protests spread to several other cities of the Donetsk region. The Ukrainian authorities announced the beginning of a large-scale special operation involving the army. Moscow called the decision to use force against supporters of federalization an extremely dangerous development of events. Earlier, four-sided talks on the crisis in Ukraine took place in Geneva; the parties agreed on measures to de-escalate the conflict. Kiev has suspended the active phase of the special operation.
Donetsk region: militiaman wounded as Ukrainian military recaptures two its armoured vehicles
A militiaman is said to have been wounded in an operation by the Ukrainian military to get back two of the airborne fighting vehicles that were earlier captured by Ukraine federalization supporters in Donetsk Region, the militiamen's commander Vyacheslav Ponomaryov has told the RIA Novosti news agency.
Ukraine's Defence Ministry said yesterday that the paratroopers got back two of the six armoured vehicles that were captured by people's militia in Kramatorsk on the 16th of this month.
According to Ponomaryov, his militiamen received nine airborne fighting vehicles of the 25th Independent Brigade, which entered Kramatorsk, but refused to fight the local militia.
Since two of the armoured vehicles had broken down, the militiamen took them to the Storailway station near Kramatorsk to have them repaired there.
But two helicopters with a task force aboard landed there hours later, and fired shots into the air and at a militiaman, wounding him.
The task force established control over the station, repaired the two broken vehicles and drove them to the local airfield that the Ukrainian army remains in control of.
According to Ponomaryov, the other airborne fighting vehicles are situated in a reinforced residential quarter in the centre of Slavyansk.
The militiamen used them yesterday to travel to a nearby village, Seversk, to change the Ukrainian flags over the local police station and administration building for those of the Donetsk People's Republic.
Those in favour of Ukraine federalization have held rallies in eastern Ukraine, specifically in Donetsk, Lugansk and Kharkov, since March this year.
The protests later spread to several other Donetsk Region cities.
The Ukrainian authorities announced the launching of a large-scale special operation involving the armed forces. Moscow sees the decision to use force, including the use of army units, as a dangerous scenario.
Four-party talks on Ukraine's crisis were held in Geneva earlier this week, with the parties reaching agreement on moves to de-escalate the conflict. Kiev has since suspended the active phase of the special operation.
