Quadrilateral meeting on Ukraine in jeopardy, UNSC session ended in vain

14 April 2014, 07:20 -- International community must demand that those who are in power in Kiev stop war on their own citizens in south-eastern Ukraine, Russia's envoy to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, said during the UN Security Council urgent session.'Stop spreading tales that we built up military armadas on the border with this country, ready at any moment, within a few hours to reach almost as far as La Manche, that we sent hordes of agents to coordinate actions of the protesting people of Ukraine,' Churkin said not even trying to hide his indignation.

The meeting of Russia, the US, the EU and the Ukraine on 17 April may be frustrated if Kiev uses force in the east of the country, Russia's representative at the UN Vitaly Churkin said at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in the Ukraine.

Earlier, speaker of Verkhovna Rada, Alexander Turchinov, appointed acting president by the parliament, announced a large-scale special operation involving the Ukrainian armed forces in connection with events in the east of the country. The ultimatum declared by the authorities in Kiev to adherents of federalization expires on Monday morning. The protesters are expected to leave the administrative buildings they occupied in the cities of the region.

Russia's representative at the United Nations Vitaly Churkin believes that US Vice President Joe Biden should immediately talk Ukrainian Acting President Alexander Turchinov out of carrying out a special operation involving the armed forces in the east of the country.

The ultimatum declared by the authorities in Kiev against adherents of federalization in the south-east of the Ukraine expires on Monday morning.

Urgent steps should be taken, otherwise the situation may become irreversible, Churkin said at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. Churkin believes that in case of procrastination the US will be encouraging the execution of a criminal order to use the armed forces.

US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power said that Vice President Joe Biden is to go to the Ukraine on 21 April.

Russia's representative at the UN Vitaly Churkin said that Russia hopes its appeal to the UN Security Council to prevent the Ukrainian government's rash actions in the east of the country will get a hearing.

There was a lot of propaganda but we hope that our delegation's appeal to take urgent steps to prevent the authorities' rash acts in the east of the Ukraine will be granted, Churkin told journalists.

British ambassador Mark Lyall Grant described the last 48 hours in eastern Ukraine as a 'dangerous escalation of an already dangerous situation.'

'The situation is therefore now more combustible than ever,' Fernandez-Taranco said, warning against a spillover of 'potentially severe consequences.' In such circumstances all the parties concerned have agreed that immediate paeceful solution is vitally needed. That was, probably, the only matter upon which the UNSC member states had consensus.

The parties concerned have not come to any sensible solution, preferring to throw at each other accusations.Meanwhile, tensions in the eastern regions of Ukrainian continue. Thousands of protesters are demanding federalization of the country have been seizing buildings of law enforcement agencies. In just a few hours as Kiev's deadline runs out events in Ukrainian eastern parts can take an irreversible turn, Russian envoy to UN warns.

UN Security Council holds urgent meeting on Ukraine upon Russian request

The United Nations Security Council has gathered for an urgent, open format session, to discuss the situation in eastern Ukraine at Russia's request at 04:00 am Moscow time on Monday (08:00 pm GMT), Russia's Permanent Mission to the UN says. Ukraine's UN envoy Yuriy Sergeyev also takes part in a Security Council meeting.

The UN Security Council has called an emergency meeting at Russia's request to discuss the growing crisis in Ukraine.

The President of the Security Council confirmed in an email that members have been invited to attend 'informal consultations' on Ukraine on Sunday evening.

The meeting comes as the new Ukrainian government declared it would deploy armed forces to quash anti-Maidan protests in eastern Ukraine.
