Counter-protest operations in eastern Ukraine directed by foreign secret service emissaries – Russian MP
13 April 2014, 16:46 -- Law enforcement operations against federalization supporters in eastern Ukraine are being directed by foreign secret service emissaries, but many law enforcers are refusing to obey their orders, Russian State Duma deputy Frants Klintsevich said.
'The law enforcement agencies in Kiev are doing nothing on their own. They are being bossed around by foreign secret service emissaries, including from the United States. At first, they orchestrated a coup, and at present, they are trying to maintain power,' he said in an interview to RIA.
On Saturday, supporters of Ukraine's federalization seized administrative buildings in three towns in the eastern Donetsk region – Slavyansk, Krasny Liman and Kramatorsk. On Sunday morning, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov wrote on his Facebook page that a massive law enforcement operation was being launched in Slavyansk. There have been reports of one person killed and two others wounded among the protesters and also of two Right Sector nationalists killed during the operation. But those reports are yet to be verified.
Klintsevich accused the Ukrainian authorities of disproportionately cracking down on eastern Ukrainians calling for federalization and seeking broader powers for their regions.
'It's clear that instructors and specialists from abroad are playing the first fiddle,' the MP said, adding that he was glad that many Ukrainians were refusing to get involved in that.
Without doubt, mercenaries will be brought in to break up the protests, but the fact will be kept secret, the MP said.
'They (mercenaries) will come and conduct such operations,' he said.
The situation in eastern Ukraine puts Russia in a dilemma because it has no right to react, and yet it's impossible for it not to react, Klintsevich concluded.
