Ukraine: More than 1,000 people rally in support of country'ss federalization in Slavyansk
13 April 2014, 20:54 -- More than 1,000 people have arrived at a meeting in support of the federalization of Ukraine in the center of Slavyansk, a city in the country's Donetsk region, on Sunday, April 13. All those present are demanding to hold a referendum on this issue and to stop putting pressure on the Donbass residents.
Activists have joined the local militias, which are standing guard near the City Administration Building and the Interior Forces Department.
Most of the participants are women, and some of them have arrived at the meeting together with their children. The participants are chanting: 'Glory to Donbass!' The rally has been in progress for several days now, and speakers continue to deliver their speeches. In the evening, after the end of the evening shift, the number of participants usually grows.
It is a peaceful event, and there are only a few people against the federalization process among the participants of the rally. The representatives of the Donbass militias are doing their utmost to nip in the bud all possible scuffles.
Arsen Avakov, who was earlier appointed to the post of interior minister by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, has urged the residents of Slavyansk to stay at home and not to go to the street.
