Regional administration in Ukrainian Donetsk controlled by pro-Russian protesters

8 April 2014, 13:13 -- Activists of pro-Russian organizations continue to control the building of the Donetsk region administration on Tuesday morning. According to journalists who have been allowed to enter the building, protesters are occupying several offices, where they have put mattresses on the floor, Interfax reports.

A canteen is open in the building where protesters are provided with meals free of charge.

A part of the building's property has been damaged, eyewitnesses have claimed.

Protesters can still be seen outside of the regional administration headquarters in Oktyabrskaya Square. A two-meter-high barricade, made of car tires and timber boards and surrounded by barbed wire, has appeared near the building entrance. There are also several barrel fires, at which protesters keep themselves warm at nighttime. Protesters are storing firewood near the city's Bohdan Khmelnytsky Avenue.

People dressed in camouflage and wearing masks are guarding the building entrance.

Anti-terrorist operation starts in Ukraine's Kharkov, city center blocked

Ukraine's Interior Ministry has launched an anti-terrorist operation in the eastern city of Kharkov by blocking the city center, said acting Interior Minister Arsen Avakov. At least 70 activists have been arrested by the police, RT reports.

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry has started a counter-terrorist raid in the city of Kharkov, in a region that proclaimed itself independent on Monday evening. The Interior Minister appointed by Ukrainian parliament Arseny Avakov said this on Tuesday.

'A counter-terrorist operation has started in the city. The city's downtown is blocked. However, there is no need to worry. We will open it as soon as we are done with the special operation,' he noted.

Additional police commando forces were earlier dispatched to eastern and southern regions of Ukraine from other provinces of the country.

'These special forces are prepared to settle operational tasks without taking into account details of the current local situation,' the ministry's press service quoted Avakov as saying.

Protesters seize building of Ukrainian Security Services Donetsk dep't

Protesters have seized the building of the Ukrainian Security Service's Donetsk department. Donbass 'people's militia' activists reported in social networking media that the building's 'perimeter had been reinforced and archives, documents and physical infrastructure were being examined.'

Pro-Russian activists had earlier seized the building of the regional administration. The police launched an inquiry under part 1, article 294 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code (mass disturbances) under the procedural supervision of the Donetsk regional prosecutor's office.

If MPs do not convene before 23:59 pm local time on 6 April and do not pass a resolution on holding a referendum, residents of the Donbass Region will declare them illegitimate. Residents of the Donbass Region demanded that regional MPs return to their seats and hold a session to discuss the issue of conducting a referendum.
