Kiev authorities giving school camps to neo-Nazis for military training

22 March 2014, 08:24 -- The leader of the Ukrainian neo-Nazi organization The Right Sector Dmitry Yarosh has been given the property and funds of 23 children's holiday camps for training youth ranks for the Ukrainian National Guard. The youth wing of The Right Sector mostly consists of under-age football ultras and adherents to Ukrainian nationalism. They were the backbone of Euromaidan hardliners who took part in armed clashes with Berkut, the elite riot police, that ended with storming the government buildings and seizing power in Kiev.

'He was rebuffed by the Defence Ministry that flatly refused to provide its military camps and firing grounds for training the National Guard. He exchanged high words with acting Defence Minister Ihor Tenyukh who has a sceptical attitude to all Yarosh's activities. After that Yarosh managed to persuade Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, against the better judgment of the Health Ministry and the Ministry of Education and Science, to delegate operating management rights for 23 children's holiday camps all over the Ukraine to him. The camps will be used as training grounds,' a Ukrainian MP from the Svoboda faction said on a no-name basis.

'Yarosh cunningly takes advantage of young people's radical moods, he sees young people as his stronghold that will follow him like sheep. This is why he is aggressively pressing for preference for his under-age supporters. He has come forward with an initiative to establish a youth wing of the National Guard,' the MP said.

He said that in the children's camps the militants of the nationalist youth wing, who are more often referred to as Yarosh Jugend now, will practice military fundamentals, subversive activities, hand-to-hand fighting and blasting work. Conscription of young people is carried out daily by territorial branches of the National Guard recruiting service.
